My Review:
I loved this book as a child. I bought it when the book fair came to my primary school when I was nine. A few years later I went to my shelf to pick it up for another read and it was no longer there. I have no idea who “borrowed” it, but this was one of the losses that I truly mourned. It was my first taste of the supernatural, and I fell in love with the genre then and there. Every single collection of ghost stories I have since purchased has been a pale imitation of this one. I’m three stories in and still loving it.
I was also delighted to note that my favourite story in the collection, “Kept In”, was written by Rosemary Timperley, who penned “The House of Mad Children” a book that I read every year, and never fails to charm and distress me in equal measures.

Hi I am looking for one of Mary Danby’s stories I read many years ago about a boy called Tim who lived in the Victorian era at a school. It starts off with ‘when the moon peers in through the window’ and talks about a girl going to an older part of her school and seeing a boy in a red jersey vanishing by a cupboard. Two teachers go to investigate after schoo and find a diary in a hidden cupboard where they almost get trapped. The diary is written by the Victorian headmaster about Tim and how he froze to death.
If anyone knows story, can they tell me what it is, and what book it was in please? Many thanks.
I know it’s a year late, but I’ve only just seen this comment amid the sea of spam this blog receives. I’m afraid I’ve never heard of the story, but if I ever do stumble across it I will update the blog.
